Why do yoga?

yoga makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, shape up -- all at the same time.
The popularity of the Yoga retreat has exploded recently, and though retreats are part of the yogic tradition, they have evolved from the original intent of self imposed exile into a much more alluring commodity. Yogis of old were expected upon reaching a certain age, to walk away from family, friends, business and home to retreat into the forest, practice austerities, and find realization.
We often find our mind in a state of all-pointedness, focusing on countless different directions, distractions and thoughts. The yogis tell us that this state of all-pointedness scatters our awareness while dissipating and draining our energy.
For Millennia the river Ganges in India has been the most revered river in the world. Hindus who worship the river as the goddess Ganga consider it to be sacred, and believe that bathing in Ganges will purify the body and the spirit.

Yoga Poses for Depression

Yoga’s regulating and energizing properties can help alleviate many of the symptoms of mild depression. The following postures activate and move prana in the body, open the heart center, stimulate and nervous system and balance the body-mind-spirit. A slow, gentle practice is recommended; do not overexert yourself or you may end up more tired than you began. Practice as often as possible; daily is most beneficial. Yoga is contraindicated with severe depression or other serious mental disorders. A yoga practice should be used to supplement conventional therapy, not replace it.

In some spaces, studios have seen a growth in classes as students look for ways of managing the mounting stress, but in other locations, trimming the budget has led to a decline in yoga students at studios and gyms having deemed the expense excessive.
